In the not too distant past
We thought that life would always last
It was a time of great prosperity
It was a time without anxiety

Now our hearts are filled with pain
And our lives are not the same
While we remember all our fallen friends
We also wonder will this madness end?

But the Spirit of America
Will overcome this senseless hate
And we must remember all the things
That have made our country great

Because the Spirit of Liberty
Is a beacon for all to see
And the Spirit of Freedom flies
Over Land and Sky
On an Eagle's mighty wings

Because the Spirit of Providence
With the Spirit of Tolerance
Will guide us through our darkest days
And darkest nights

As we wipe away our tears
And we try to calm our fears
We've lost a part of our self-confidence
And we've lost our youthful innocence

But our nation will go on
Because together we are strong
We still have faith in our humanity
Despite this new and harsh reality

And the Spirit of America
Will overcome this senseless hate
And we must remember all the things
That have made our country great

Because the Spirit of Liberty
Is alive in the Land of the Free
And the Spirit of Decency and Diversity
Are things we've cherished for so long

It's the Spirit that's in us each day
And it's here in the Home of the Brave

It's in our soldiers and peacemakers
It's in our sons and daughters too
It's the Spirit that runs deep through us
Because it lives in me and you
